All images are linked to larger ~600x600 pixel images. Scans were done at 1200 dpi, with sharpen more (1220), or unsharp mask moderate (PLIII) and using MagicMatch color correction. Postprocessing is limited to cleaning up the backgrounds, adjusting the brightness and resizing to 72 dpi, 600 and 200 pixels wide using Photoshop 5 on a Macintosh. Please note that the differences are much more noticible on the larger images.

Tech. note: The images were "brightened" by using the RGB levels control in Photoshop and, moving the right slider until areas of the histogram >0 were reached.

The following coins were chosen for subtleties in toning lack of contrast.

UMAX Vista 1220U (about $150) UMAX Powerlook III (about $750)

Looking at the small images this appears a wash. However the PLIII colors are much closer to the originals than the 122o (eg the only green coins are the 2nd and 5th from the top). If you look at the larger pictures, the images are much crisper from the PLIII. These differences can be corrected to some extent both during and after scanning. But, the PL III gives on more to work with.
